During the periods from 1 July 1884 to 13 April 1923 and from 15 August 1932 to 1952, unpaid or underpaid postal items required the addressee to pay twice the missing amount of the postal tariff, collected through special “postage due” stamps. Such irregular items were marked with a “T” handstamp at the office of posting, and the exact fee was determined upon delivery. Between 13 April 1923 and 15 August 1932, underpaid items were not accepted for dispatch, while those arriving from abroad were charged with ordinary postage stamps. After 1952, postage‑due fees were collected in cash and noted directly on the letter, and postage‑due stamps were also used on other types of postal materials.
