During the Second World War, with Germany’s approval, Macedonia was placed under Bulgarian administration. After Bulgaria left the war and declared war on Germany, German troops occupied Macedonia. On 8 September 1944, the territory was proclaimed an independent state under German control. This Macedonian government existed for only 65 days, until the withdrawal of German forces on 13 November 1944. During this short period, due to the lack of its own postage stamps, the available Bulgarian issues were overprinted with a two‑line inscription “MACEDONIA/8.IX.1944” and new denominations. On the first two values (MAC8 and MAC9), the word “Macedonia” appears in lowercase letters, while on all others it is printed in uppercase. The MAC8 (1 lev) and MAC15 (30 lev) stamps were overprinted in blue ink, and all remaining values in red. The entire overprinting process was carried out within a single day: 27 October 1944. BK MAC8-15 stamps are of two types. Type I - with a pointed lower end of the digit "9" of "1944" and Type II - with a rounded lower end of the digit "9" of "1944".
